English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Advanced
  • English Extension 1
  • English Extension 2
  • English Standard
  • English Studies.

English faculty

The English Faculty at Alstonville High School is a dynamic, professional and collegial team of highly skilled educators who deliver quality educational opportunities and outcomes to our students.  The faculty brings together a range of abilities and expertise, embracing decades of collective experience and passion for the diverse aesthetic opportunities that the study of language and literature provides.

Our teachers embrace creativity and pedagogical innovation, providing challenging content that assist in providing differentiated activities for all students, including those with learning disabilities and gifted and talented.  Our High Performance programs enable students to be academically supported, enabling students to achieve their personal best while our boys' reengagement class enables students to truly engage with their learning and develop their key skills.

Students are encouraged to enter a range of English competitions including debating, public speaking and writing competitions.

In the senior school, Extension courses prove to be highly popular as students embrace English, actively challenging their skills and abilities in a vibrant and rewarding environment.

The Library also supervised by the Head Teacher English.
