Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

Mathematics faculty

The Maths Staff at Alstonville High School consists of 7 teachers  Since the inception of Alstonville High School in 1986, we have maintained a proud history of achieving exceptional outcomes in external examinations and competitions. In the Higher School Certificate our students regularly place in the merit list in all levels. This trend has been mirrored in performances in other competitions like the Australian Mathematics Competition.

The Maths faculty at Alstonville High School is extremely experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It functions in a supportive, friendly and harmonious environment and these factors assist in enabling students to achieve to the best of their capabilities. The expertise of individual teachers enables exceptional delivery of all courses including the Extension 1 and 2 levels at the HSC.

Extension opportunities for the most capable Mathematicians are provided through external programs, and students are encouraged and supported once they have chosen to engage in these opportunities.
